Our Story
BuilderHub didn't start in a startup accelerator. It started in Red Lodge, Montana, during the construction of our home.
THE BEGINNING
I am not a builder. I am not a contractor. I am a special education consultant who has spent 30 years helping people communicate more clearly — helping students, families, and educators find shared language and shared understanding.
When my husband Greg and I decided to build a custom home in Red Lodge, Montana, I approached it the way I approach everything: with a plan, a system, and a whole lot of organized documentation.
I created a comprehensive slide deck. Color palettes. Inspiration photos. Arrow callouts explaining exactly what I loved and why. Screenshots of every product I had selected with pricing. Room by room. Detail by detail.
I thought we had covered everything.
THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED
Our builder is skilled, experienced, and well-respected in the community. He builds beautiful homes. He just was not a technology person — and like most builders, he did not have a system for making sure every subcontractor on his team had access to the homeowner's vision.
The painter came in to stain the interior doors. He stained them dark brown.
We had specified white oak. Clearly. With photos. With callouts. In the slide deck that our builder had seen, but that the painter — working from his own assumptions — had never been given access to.
Our builder did not make us absorb the cost. He is that kind of builder. He paid to have every door redone.
But here is what stayed with me: it was not his fault. It was not the painter's fault. It was not our fault. It was the fault of a system that did not exist — a shared, accessible, real-time record of what we wanted and why we wanted it.
THE EDUCATION WE NEEDED
The doors were the most dramatic moment, but they were not the only gap. We did not know that appliance specifications needed to be finalized during the foundation phase — because the footprint of kitchen walls, plumbing rough-ins, and electrical locations all depend on knowing exactly what appliances are going where.
Nobody told us. Not because our builder was negligent — he was managing dozens of moving pieces, coordinating a team of subcontractors, tracking a budget, and fielding questions from the county. He did not have time to be our construction educator.
But we needed one. Every homeowner building a custom home needs one.
I started writing down everything I wished someone had told us before each phase began. It became a document. Then a curriculum. Then the foundation for BuilderHub's phase-by-phase homeowner guides.
THE SOLUTION
I have spent my career believing that when people struggle, it is rarely because they lack intelligence or effort. It is almost always because they lack the right system — the right scaffolding, the right tools, the right structure to support what they are trying to accomplish.
That is exactly what I saw in residential construction.
Builders are skilled professionals who need better tools to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders. Homeowners are intelligent people making the largest financial investment of their lives — they just need guidance, education, and a way to stay connected to what is happening. Subcontractors are expert tradespeople who need clear information, documented decisions, and faster payments.
None of them need more complexity. They need the right system.
BuilderHub is that system. Every feature traces back to a specific moment in our build where things went wrong — or where they could have gone so much better.
The Vision Board is my slide deck, built into the platform and shared with every person on the team.
The phase-gated Decisions feature exists so no homeowner ever misses an appliance spec because nobody told them it was needed.
The Selections audit trail — timestamped, confirmed, attributed — exists so no painter ever stains a door the wrong color because the homeowner's vision was locked in a file nobody could access.
Every feature in BuilderHub exists because something went wrong without it.
